Make sure that your virus scanner is up to date AND IS WORKING
It would also make sense to do a full scan of your system. If you have any doubt about your virus scan facility then visit the Trend Micro web site at http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise/products/housecall_pre.php  and run the very useful scanning facility (which is free of charge) available there. The utility is called HouseCall and is very good. You should also make sure that  you have all the latest patches from Microsoft installed. You should delete, without opening any emails from sources that you do not know if they contain attachments. If you are at all suspicious you can always email the sender and ask them if they have intentionally sent you mail.
Click on this link to view a document that contains sound advice on how to protect your machine. I didn't write the document but it is good advice.
